It’s no secret that talking about mental health and substance use can be difficult. While the topics have become more normalized in recent years, it can still be an internal battle to work up the courage to be vulnerable when speaking about them.
Most of the time, I appreciate the seasonal changes. But I also can’t ignore the fact that the weather impacts my mood greatly. The dark, gloomy days, especially during the winters, often leave me feeling down and irritated. Spring is often the worst, as we get tastes of amazing weather, usually followed by another dumping of snow. The shift of fall into winter is also hard, as the days get shorter and darker.
From movies like Deadpool to standup to TV sitcoms, the image of someone chasing away traumatic memories with a drink, a snort, or a shot has become a staple of pop culture. The result is that most people know that drug use, especially compulsive drug use, is tied to trauma—but they may not understand why, or how serious this reality truly is.
